Cyprus is a small island country located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is a former British colony and became an independent republic in 1960. The country is divided into two parts: the Republic of Cyprus, which is the internationally recognized government, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is only recognized by Turkey. The two parts have been in conflict since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded the north of the island.
