The city of Reggio Calabria is located in the southernmost tip of the Italian peninsula, on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is the capital of the Calabria region. The city is said to have been founded by the Greek hero, Argive, in 776 BC. The city played an important role in the history of Magna Graecia, the Greek colonies in southern Italy. It was a major center of culture and trade. The city was also ruled by the Byzantines, the Arabs, and the Normans. In the 12th century, the city came under the rule of the Hohenstaufen dynasty. In the 15th century, it came under the rule of the Aragonese dynasty. In 1735, it became a part of the Kingdom of Naples. In 1860, the city became part of the Kingdom of Italy. In 1934, it was elevated to the status of a city.
