The island of Skiathos is located in the north-eastern Aegean Sea, close to the mainland of Greece. Skiathos is a popular tourist destination and is known for its beaches, pine forests and its nightlife. The island was inhabited in antiquity, but the first significant settlement dates from the 9th century AD. The town of Skiathos was founded in the late 15th century and played an important role in the history of the Aegean Sea. In 1807, during the Napoleonic Wars, Skiathos was captured by the British and remained under British rule until 1864. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1890, but was rebuilt and expanded. Skiathos was occupied by the Germans during World War II, and was liberated by the British in 1944. The island was damaged by a earthquake in 1978, but was rebuilt. Skiathos is a popular tourist destination and has a population of about 10,000 inhabitants.
