The history of Romania is a long and complex one, dating back to the prehistoric era. The first written record of the country is from the Roman historian Tacitus, who referred to it as Dacia. The region was conquered by the Roman Empire in 106 AD, and remained under Roman rule until the 4th century AD. In the Middle Ages, Romania was divided between the Byzantine Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. It was eventually unified under the rule of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. In 1859, Romania declared independence from the Ottoman Empire, and in 1877 it became a kingdom. The country remained a monarchy until 1947, when it became a republic. Romania was a member of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact alliance from 1955 to 1991, and since its independence has been a member of the European Union.
