Spain is a country located in southwestern Europe. It is bordered by France and Andorra to the north, Portugal to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The country's capital and largest city is Madrid. Spain is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. It has a population of over 46 million people and a GDP of over $1.4 trillion. The country is a member of the European Union and the eurozone. Spain's history dates back to the early 8th century, when the Iberian Peninsula was conquered by the Moors. The country was later ruled by the Christians and became a part of the Spanish Empire. In the 19th century, Spain lost many of its colonies in Latin America and the Philippines. The country endured a civil war in the 1930s and a dictatorship in the 1940s. Spain became a democracy in the 1970s and joined the European Union in 1986. The country has been a member of the eurozone since 1999. Spain suffered from a financial crisis in the late 2000s, but has since recovered.

“Within all of us is a varying amount of space lint and star dust, the residue from our creation. Most are too busy to notice it, and it is stronger in some than others. It is strongest in those of us who fly and is responsible for an unconscious, subtle desire to slip into some wings and try for the elusive boundaries of our origin.” – K.O. Eckland
